The Secret

I vowed never to return
to this place of terrible memories
and so many wasted lives;
I thought I never would.

I couldn't believe it
when I heard
this land was next to be taken.
Didn't they read their history
or remember what happened
there to the Eden Advance?

Half truths and superstitions
they told me
my account is biased
that it was illness
which destroyed the
not some curse on the land.

They have no way of knowing
the horrors of those days.
Days spent under blood red skies
and nights when the moon never shone.
Dreams were filled with portends
their waking hours were strange visions. That land held a dark secret
they thought to discover.
They paid for that presumption
with their lives.

Even now it's difficult
to speak of those days
-and all the good people that were lost to the curse of the land
and the darkness upon itwithout
chocking on my anger
or crying aloud.

I alone escaped
the only one of sixteen.
And as I ran to
escape the consuming darkness
I made a promise to myself:
I would never go back.
But I had no choice
These foolish people wouldn't listen
and I couldn't let them go
running blindly to their fates
without trying to save them.
So I went with them as their guide
and leader of this new

The curse, I told them,
you can't shake it.
I was aware that this time I might not
be able to run fast enough
to leave it behind

So as our small band departed
I was scared
that I would never see my home
or my friends
again after that day.

The journey here took three weeks
coming slowly as we did
and when we arrived they
seemed so happy
to escape life on the road; but they don't have the memories of this place I do.

I can see where Uly's tent
was pitched when he disappeared.
There's the lake Bess drowned in
next to the cliffs where True broke her neck And there's the willow
that Cameron hung himself from
Later Alonzo sat under that tree
-crazy- and died of exposure.
The ground drank the blood where Morgan lay he bled to death.

I shut my eyes against it
yet I can still see all
it happens over and over
every detail burned into my brain
a nightmare that knows no waking
once again I watch them die
helpless to stop it.

Right over there is the river bank
where Julia collapsed and died
from an allergic reaction.
To the south of that is the meadow
where Walman and Baines
argued with knives
and fatal results for both.
A few steps from that is Yale's grave
failure after failure
made him ask to be released.
And Patricia's set up camp in the field where Danziger said,
Parents shouldn't out live their children and shot Devon in cold blood
then-smiling- turned the gun on himself.

Now I'm seeing early signs -just after two daysof the mind-numbing despair
and off-handed indifference
that foreshadowed the disaster
the sheer tragedy
which befell the
settling in amoung
this small band.
May God have mercy on them now.

The woman closes her report
she smiles at how well things are working out. This group is detiorating at a rate
much quicker and with a higher rate of sucess than the E.A. ; this second generation drug truely is a wonder.

She laughs at how these fools
never thought to ask how she survived “the curse” She lived through those terrible days
because she was part of the plan.
She'll survive these dark days
she has an in.

With the power to kill
she was the second spy for Eden Advance. Linda Magus
is Council
and everyone that knows it
is dead or dying.
