The Beginnings, Part 1
by Stephanie Ladd

Introduction:

This story takes place approximately one year in advance to the pilot episode opening. It jumps to the point just before the pilot episode begins, I wrote this story because I felt we needed more of an introduction to the characters and how they became involved with the Eden Project. Though I'm sure that my story lacks in the same manner that the pilot did, but hopefully the knowledge of both the series and this story help clear things up. This story only contains large parts for Devon, Julia, and Alonzo. There are smaller parts for Morgan and Bess Martin, Yale, Brodrick O'Neill, John and True Danziger, and Uly; as well as other characters.
Unfortunately, there are no parts for the seven other minor characters in this story. I mainly focused on the main nine. Please enjoy and keep in mind this is my first attempt at fan fiction :-).

The Beginnings, Part 1
by Stephanie Ladd

The year is 2191 and the place is the Stations orbiting Earth.

Devon Adair looked out her office viewport at the big blue and brown ball that was just under her viewport window. She was imaging what that planet had once been like only two centuries ago. Green forests with fresh water springs and sparkling blue ocean water. *What a sight that must have been,* she thought to herself. She had seen the ocean view from VR programs and knew that she wanted to live near the ocean. That, of course, was very hard to do when you lived in a tin can that orbited the only planet that contained water in the solar system. Today Devon felt full of hope that she would finally get to see the ocean in person. Today she had received level five clearance on the most important project of her life. Devon suddenly jumped in surprise as a chime flowed into her mind.

A voice said, "Ms. Adair, your first appointment is here."

Devon almost instantly recognized the voice belonging to her secretary. Devon left the viewport and walked to the big desk in the middle of the room. She sat down and put her slender finger on the button that would relay her message back to the secretary in the other room.

"Anne, please give me a minute," Devon was somewhat shakened. She needed time to gather her thoughts before she could face anyone.

Devon's eyes drifted down to the file that laid exposed on her desk. It read; EDEN PROJECT CONFIDENTIAL, next to it was the memo that she had received from Dison Blalock that announced the newest clearance level for the project. She had spent the entire morning confirming that the memo was authentic and that her dreams were actually one step closer to becoming real. This project had become her top priority ever since her only son, Ulysses Adair, had been diagnosed with the Syndrome five years ago. The Syndrome was barely recognized as a disease because it was not caused by any form of virus or bacteria. Instead, it was a lack of these viruses and bacteria that had caused the now growing epidemic. Devon had the best doctors and the best specialists working on a cure for this disease. Those experts in their respective fields had come to one conclusion: get off the Stations. Find a habitable planet to live on.

This solution was not a guaranteed cure for Uly, but it was guaranteed to prevent the extinction of the human race. This extinction was sure to take place if humans continued to live on the Stations. Since Devon had found out what was wrong with her son and how a possible cure could be found she immediately started the EDEN PROJECT, this project was hers. She supported the project entirely with her own funds and she was in charge of every detail. With her connections to the government of the Stations she had gotten the Project to level two clearance. For the past five years she had struggled to get the remaining four levels of clearance; these she needed before she could depart from the Stations on her way to the new planet. The planet that was humanity's hope for survival. Faced with stalls and Red tape she had used this time to secure other aspects of the mission. Supplies, laborers, and equipment were all critical to the mission, but the most important were the passengers they would be taking with them. Devon had decided to transport as many families of Syndrome inflicted children as would come. At present they had one hundred and forty five families that were willing to follow Devon on her mission to help their children and all of humanity.

Laborers or crew members as Devon called them; this thought brought Devon back to her appointment. She had people to do the hiring for her, but since it was her project she had insisted on meeting with all of the crew members that would be involved in the Project. Commander Brodrick O'Neill, a long time friend and her right hand man on the Project; had suggested and hired the pilot of the Eden Advance ship. He had said this man was the best pilot on the Stations and she had confidence in his opinions about people. Devon shifted in her chair and pulled up the biostats on Mr. Alonzo Solace.

She briefly looked them over. *Impressive,* she thought to herself, and placed a finger on the intercom.

"I am ready Anne, please send him in," she said with a clearer head.

The door opened a moment later and a dark haired young man walked in.

"Good morning, Mr. Solace please have a seat," she said as she raised her eyebrows.

"Thank you," Alonzo said in a slightly nervous tone. *Mr. Solace, now that's something he rarely heard from people.* He looked at this woman, she was beautiful, he could not deny that fact but something about her made him nervous. *Besides* he told himself, she had a kid and although he liked kids he did not get involved with women who had kids-it was to complicated. Brushing these thoughts about his boss out of his mind he concentrated on what she was saying.

"I realize that you have already been hired as the pilot of the Advance ship, but this meeting is just a formality," Devon said evenly then continued, "I am meeting with all of the crew and colonists."

"Well, Ms. Adair I am looking forward to piloting the ship and delivering you and the colonists to your destination," Alonzo said in a rush, as though he was familiar with the routine.

"Thank you, Mr. Solace I am sure you will provide us with the best of you abilities on our journey to planet G889," Devon had a slight smile.

"Yes ma'am," Alonzo let the cocky tone, that was his trademark on the Stations, escape him. *When he was there anyway,* he thought to himself as he continued aloud, "In two days I leave for a ten month mission to the Station orbiting Saturn, but I will be returning to this port to fly your Eden Advance ship when you have clearance to leave."

"Mr. Solace, I realize you are leaving on your current mission and I assure you that it will not conflict with Eden Project, we are expected to get level six clearance for the departure within the year," Devon said this more to convince herself then to convince him.

"Very well, I will be here to pilot your ship for you," Alonzo said in a satisfied tone.

"Just one final thing, Mr. Solace, will you be attending the Eden Project send off reception? I'm holding the party approximately a week before we depart from this Station?" Devon returned his cocky response with a playful tone, "When we finally do get our final clearance, that is."

Alonzo rose to his feet and struck a smile, that made Devon blush on the inside of her cheeks. "Ms. Adair you can count me in." He then turned and exited her office.

"I am already running late," the young woman said to someone in the next room, "I have to meet Dr. Vasquez at precisely ten-hundred hours."

The light haired woman stuck her head around the corner and peered in at her daughter. Julia Heller was a beautiful looking woman and she looked very much like she had when she was 22 years old. Julia had medium length sandy blond hair and she was of medium height. The older woman had made sure that she had followed in the tradition of the Heller name.

"Julia, we have to meet for dinner for your birthday celebration and I have something important to tell you," she said in a matter-of-fact tone.

Julia recognized the tone in her mother's voice and knew that she was not going to win this argument. "All right, but I have to go now. I will meet you at our favorite restaurant at eighteen-hundred hours."

Julia left the quarters that she shared with her mother and headed to the hospital. She was part of Dr. Vasquezs' team that was going to planet G889. Julia was going to be interviewed by Devon Adair today and she was determined to make a good impression on that woman. She arrived at the hospital ward just shy of ten-hundred hours.

"Good morning, Dr. Vasquez." Julia had an even tone as she walked up to the older gentleman who was her mentor. This was forced because she was really out of breath from running to the hospital to make it on time for her rounds with Dr. Vasquez.

"Good morning, Dr. Heller, how is your mother today?" he asked with a smile.

Julia had known Dr. Vasquez since she was born and they were friends. Friends to Julia were important because they were something she had all to few of; she was always working or studying. This friendly greeting made Julia's face turn up into a small smile, "Oh, she is fine and sends her regards."

"Well, we should make our rounds before we head up to Devon Adair's office," Dr. Vasquez said in a casual tone. He had been Uly's doctor since birth as well as being the chief doctor on the Eden Project. He had asked Julia if she would accompany him to the new colony to help with the Syndrome children as his intern. She had agreed and after completing her medical training she immediately began working with the Syndrome children. Dr. Vasquez had devoted the last few years to finding a cure and he was one of Devon's most trusted doctors. They had worked together on the Eden Project and it was his dream as well as Devon's dream.

An hour passed as Dr. Vasquez and Julia checked on each of the children in the Syndrome ward. Julia was growing wary of the time and said, "Doctor, should we go up to Ms. Adair's office now, it is almost time for my interview."

"You go up first and I will be there when you get through with the meeting. I want to stay here a bit longer, and check on a few children," he said with concern in his eyes as he continued, "you must hurry up or you'll be late."

Julia left the hospital quietly and rushed to the lift that would take her up to Devon's office. As the lift carried her up she took deep breaths to calm her growing nervousness. When the doors open she looked down a well lit hallway. It was elegant and fancy. These things did not surprise her; she was use to fine things, after all, her mother was rich too.

Taking a deep breath she started down the hallway. After a few steps she saw a handsome young man come out of the office she was going to enter.

The young man wore a black jacket that looked like a flight jacket and a nice pair of pant-leggings. He turned and started walking her way with his head held slightly down. It looked like he was lost in thought.

Julia felt herself staring at the man and pulled her glance away from him. As she continued on her path to Devon Adair's office the man seemed to be approaching with speed and before Julia could get out of the way they collided.

"Excuse me," Alonzo Solace looked up at the person who he had run into.

"Pardon me," Julia blurted out as a instant response. Suddenly she saw his face, his eyes and his smile. Julia stepped back and almost fell over-stunned.

"Oh, careful," Alonzo grabbed her arm and pulled her forward, closer to him, "I guess I crashed it to you a little to hard."

"Thank you . . . I'm fine . . . have a good day," Julia turned and started back on her course to Devon's office. She was not sure why she had dismissed him so abruptly but she was here on business.

Alonzo let go of her and stood there a moment before continuing on his own course. His previous thoughts left his mind and he thought about the strange woman he had just run into; *what was her problem and why was she so quick to leave?* he asked himself. Now he actually let his mind go back to what the woman had looked like. Stunning, beautiful, perfect, were some adjectives to describe her. Her blond hair, deep blue eyes, and slender form all made him painfully aware of the woman that he had just met. He entered the lift and pressed the button to go down.

Julia entered the office of Devon Adair's secretary and informed her of her business and who she was. After a brief wait she entered Devon's office and sat down. Her thoughts dwelled on the stranger she had just ran into in the hallway, but as she entered Devon's office those thoughts were replaced with the business at hand.

Hours had passed since the interview with Devon Adair and Julia's mind continued to replay those events. Julia felt that the interview went well, and she had found Devon to be very polite. Julia had left her office pleased that she had made a good impression.

Julia returned to the hospital ward with Dr. Vasquez and they had discussed the interview and the children who had caused Dr. Vasquez considerable concern. As the events of the day rolled through her mind she casually walked down the corridor. It led to her favorite restaurant where she was to have dinner with her mother. Julia took a deep breath before entering the restaurant, she had always dreaded these business-like dinners with her mother. The young doctor entered the restaurant in a beautiful purple gown that she had recently acquired. The dress was sleeveless and tightly fit her torso. At the hips it opened into a flowing skirt that went to her ankles.

She spotted her mother and walked over to her table. "Hello, mother," Julia said with discomfort in her voice.

"Hello, Julia, have a seat-I already ordered for us," Julia's mother stated this with certainty in her voice. She had some important news for Julia, and did not want to waste any time, "Julia, I have something to tell you."

"What is it, mother?" Julia had a concerned look on her face.

"The Council wants you to observe and monitor the Eden Project on planet G889, when you arrive on the planet," Julia's mother said with a stressed tone as she continued, "it is your duty as a member of the Council to follow orders."

"When did the Council decide that they needed me to keep an eye on a group of colonist families and Devon Adair?" Julia said with a hint of amusement, then seeing the expression on her mother's face straighten up, "I thought they were getting the proper clearances from the Government and the Council?"

"The Government is going to have to give them clearance eventually because they can no longer stall them with ship requirements and permits," Julia's mother now wore a familiar expression. Julia was familiar with this expression of *all business* because she grew up this common expression. Alexis Heller had spent most of her life as a Council member and Julia was always second in the eyes of her mother. The Council was Alexis's life and she did everything according to the Council's objectives. Julia owed her very existence to the Council.

"Since the Government may fail to deter Devon Adair from going to G889, the Council will be required to observe the activities of the Eden Project," Alexis continued.

"Yes and the interests of the Council must be held above all others, right mother?" Julia had a bit of sarcasm in her voice. Julia was a loyal Council member but she had always felt the Council robbed her of a loving mother. The Council had influenced her life since her birth and she had been taught that the Council's goals were put before all else.

Across the Station in the Government housing section a tall slender man walked down the corridor of the Level Four Government Quarters on his way home from the office. Morgan Martin stepped into his Quarters, and there he found a smell that filled his nose and sent his brain into a dreamy state. He walked to the kitchen and discovered his wife, Bess cooking dinner. Her long curly flowing hair was tied back and her delicate features greeted him with a smile. He walked up and placed a kiss on her cheek.

"Bess, you would not believe the day I had," Morgan took a deep breath.

"Do you want to talk about it, honey?" Bess smiled at her husband.

*Morgan Martin, bauracrate, government liaison, how did you get such a loving wife?* Somehow he seemed to asked himself this question everyday and he still did not have the answer. From the moment he saw this woman he had fallen in love with her and somewhere along the line she had fallen in love with him.

"The Government has granted Devon Adair's pet project level five clearance and that means they need a government liaison to oversee the paperwork of the project," Morgan whinned.

"Did they assign you to be her government liaison, Morgan?" Bess asked concerned.

"Yes, darling and that means we will be leaving on a twenty-two light year mission to a strange planet to do paperwork," Morgan's anger was growing in his voice.

"Isn't her project the one that is looking for a new planet to live on?" Bess asked.

"Yes, and unknown creatures running around on it," Morgan replied sarcastically.

"Oh, how wonderful! I am looking forward to walking on a planet again, and smelling the sensed air, instead of this same old stale air," Bess said with excitement.

Morgan looked at his wife. She was born and raised on Earth and he thought he would never get Earth out of his wife's system despite his attempts. She talked about it often and he just smiled at her. He had hated Earth the two weeks he went there on an assignment. The best part of that two week torture was meeting Bess and spending his free time getting to know her.

Devon Adair looked at her son and smiled. They had had a big day and her son was very tired but he refused to surrender to sleep without his story.

He was so small for his age and Devon began to really get nervous when Uly's health seemed to be getting worst overall. She was very happy today because of the newest clearance level for her project; it had restored her hopes and she knew that she was almost there. Her son was running out of time and she needed to get this project going. Syndrome children never lived pass age nine and Uly was seven and a half. The *half* was very important as her son liked to remind her. Devon laughed internally, her son was so independent despite being confined to the immo-suit. He had lived almost his entire life in that suit. Immo-suits aided children with the Syndrome in movement of their limbs.

Without this aid chrildren stricken with the disease could not move under their own power--they were simply to weak. Devon prayed for the day she could see her son run and play without it. Pulling herself out of her own mind she looked at her son.

"Ulysses, you have to go to bed now," Devon said in a pleasant tone and she smiled, "you had a big day."

"Ah, Mom just a little longer, I want you to tell me a story," Uly said through labored breaths, but he had a smile on his face.

Devon could never resist her son's smiling face, "all right, but a short one."

Their big day had begun when she had gotten home from the office early and taken her son and her mentor, Yale out for a celebration dinner.

Yale was her cyborg tutor. He was mostly a man, but he had a mechanical left arm and an implanted digital left eye connection. He had been her tutor and mentor when she was young and she had kept him. He now mainly served as her son's tutor and her friend and advisor.

Devon began to tell Uly his story before retiring for the night herself.

Julia Heller walked into the brightly lit room. She recognized the dance hall from other similar dreams she had. She loved to dance and since dancing in the conscience world was limited, she often had unconscience dreams of tarring up the floor. Julia looked down to see her outfit and it was remarkably the same gown she had wore to her birthday dinner.

The music was in full swing and she decided to go to the bar in the corner of the room to see if any of the nice gentlemen would ask her to dance. Sure enough, a young dark haired man approached her and held out his hand. She accepted with a smile and they headed to the middle of the room.

The man pulled her close and placed his right hand on the small of her back and his left hand clasped around her hand and they were off in a waltz.

Julia raised her head and focused on her companions eyes. *Strange,* she thought, *he has no eyes, instead they are black ovals.* At this revelation, Julia became alarmed. The grip the stranger had on her back and on her hand tightened.

"Your hurting me, please let me go!" Julia almost yelled. The man--if that was what he was--only tightened his grip. Julia started to struggle, but she could not get free from the grip.

"What do you want, please let go of me. Let me be free, please!" Julia pleaded with the man. He would not say anything and his grip only tighten.

"No, stop, let go!" these words escaped Julia's mouth as she bolted up from her bed. Breathing quickly she looked around, only now realizing she was safe in her bed away from the stranger who would not let her go. Shaking Julia got out of bed and walk to the kitchen. She got a glass of water and went to sit in the living room. She sipped the water and thought about the nightmare.

Julia glanced at the clock on the wall and noted that it was three-hundred hours; she had to calm down a little or she would not be able to go back to sleep. She pulled her legs up and tucked them close to her body. She was upset about the conversation over dinner that her mother had conducted; but she did not know that she was upset enough to affect her on a subconscience level. That was the only reasoning
Julia could come up with to explain her nightmare.

She was very excited to go on the Eden Project mission mainly because she needed her freedom. Her mother was determined to turn her into the perfect Council member and Julia, although loyal to the council, did not agree with some of the things they did. Julia was a doctor and a good one, but she owed that to the Council and to her mother. She loved being a doctor but she had other interests and they were not what the council wanted. Medical Science had been her passion, but she also worked in her spare time on biology, zoology, anthropology, and various other areas of science. The Council disapproved of these disciplines because they all provided reasons why they should not live on the stations. Julia agreed, she did not like the Stations but then again she had nothing to compare it to. Now, the Council had found a way to control her even on a whole new world. She had to spy on the Eden Advance team. She was not a *spy*, but the Council would see to her receiving the 'proper' training for a citizen spy. Julia had calmed and now felt tired so she wandered off in the direction of her room, some things still unresolved in her mind.

Alonzo Solace sat up from the bed and turned so his feet went to the floor. "Ah, cold!" he whispered. He leaned over to the sleeping figure in the bed next to him.

Alonzo sighed then got up to dress. This scene was a familiar one to him and he took a deep breath. He would sneak away in the early morning hours and never see this woman again, or if he did it was usually years later and everything was different. They were different but he wasn't. They would be older, married, mothers, or grandmothers. Honestly he was getting a little tired of it, but that was his life. He was a sleep jumper and had no time to really get to know anyone. He would bunk with the other sleep jumpers or with a woman he met until his next mission.

"Are you leaving now, Alonzo?" a small voice mummered through the air with its origins from the woman beneath the covers.

"Yeah, I have to check in and do the pre-flight check before we take off," Alonzo said in a formal tone.

She turned over and faced the pilot. She gave him a sleepy smile, "Well, I'll miss you. You'll be back in a year, right?"

"No, Hannah, in about ten months. Five there and five back. Then you promised to go with me to that reception thing for my big mission," Alonzo was musing.

"I'll be here waiting for you, sleep jumper," Hannah yawned and continued, "speaking of sleep, get out of here so I can get some."

He leaned over and took the woman's hand. Pulling it up to his mouth he placed a gentle kiss on the top of her hand. His eyes fell on the face of the woman, her light brown hair was tousled and strains fell across her face. He took one more sigh, "see you when I get back."

The Beginnings, Part 2

Hello Edenites!

Hears the rest of my story! Again enjoy and please send me feedback!!!!! :)

*Previous disclaimers apply.

------Approximently ten months later--------

Devon Adair was directing the last of the decorations in the large meeting hall that she had acquired for the reception.

It had been confirmed that they would be leaving in exactly ten days. They would be granted level six clearance on the tenth day and depart the Stations on a course for their new home. She had spent the majority of the day directing the decorators and caterers on exactly what she wanted and where. She had hundreds of people coming and she wanted a good send off for the Eden Project.

The crew of the Advance and Colony ships were coming and most of the Syndrome families would make an appearance. Other families were forced to spend this festive evening in the hospital ward with their ill children. Devon marveled at how many families she had gotten to come-two hundred and forty-eight families in all. The Advance ship would arrive approximately two years before the Colony ship. This time would be used to construct the hospital and surrounding colony. The children were going to still be sick but the hope that they would recover in the years to come brought the hope for humanity. Certainly the families of the Syndrome children could live normal healthy lives on the new planet. Devon's mind was racing and she pulled herself out of her thoughts to concentrate on the reception.

Later that evening in Devon's personal quarters she was worried that Uly was not going to be up to the reception. This week had been very exciting and Uly had over worked himself again. "Are you sure you're not too tired, Uly?" concern on her face.

"Mom, I'm fine," Uly managed a weak smile.

"Okay, but your staying at the table and you are not moving a muscle," she said flatly. Uly knew he could not argue this with his mother.

"Thanks, Mom," Uly's face brightened into a smile, "let's go already."

"We should go, Devon they are waiting for us," Yale added in a diplomatic tone.

Giving the old cyborg a defeated look she smiled. Devon took her spot behind her son and began to push his wheelchair and Yale walked next to her escorting her to the reception. She was wearing a fine black dress with matching black heels.

The dress was a nice fit that hugged her body. The dress was ankle length with a slit that ran from the bottom to her left knee. She had her auburn hair up in a bun that was low on her head. This was a formal reception and she chose to wear her dangling earrings and matching necklace. Yale had on a standard white jacket tuxedo with black slacks; this was a mirror of Uly's attire.

A tall man held the hand of a young girl with blonde hair. They walked down the corridor in the direction of the meeting hall that held Devon Adair's reception.

True Danziger, a very stubborn young girl, pulled free from her father's grip and said fuming, "Why do we have to go to this stupid reception anyway?" She tugged at the dress she wore, feeling very uncomfortable.

"True-girl, we've already been over this, now come on," John said with a slight smile. He continued, "There will be other kids there for you to talk too, and free food." He knew that the last part would clutch it for his daughter.

True smiled, "Okay, Dad, let's go!"

John gave his independent daughter a smile and retook her hand as they continued down the corridor.

They reached the doors that opened to reveal the reception's fancy decorations. There was a large table that contained the banquet food, to the left was the bar where hundreds of strange people stood talking. True spotted the table with the food and took off quickly in that direction. John Danziger took a deep breath and slowly looked around for some familiar faces in the strange crowd. Spying his friends Wentworth and Firestein he made his way to them.

Dr. Julia Heller entered the meeting hall in her only real gown (the purple one that she wore to every formal affair). She was simple and did not regard clothing as a priority. She wore a shawl over her bare shoulders and her jewelry was simple; a pair of earrings that had a medium dangle length and a necklace. On her fingers were her favorite rings. She walked over to the cloak room and registered her shawl and bag.

She then walked over to the complimentary bar and ordered a drink. She had not come with anyone and expected the evening to be rather boring. She was there at her mother's request, and Dr. Vasquez had also insisted she meet some of the people she was going to be living with at the colony in New Pacifica. New Pacifica was the region where Devon had decided to set up the colony. Julia being the shy and reserved type was waiting until someone approached her to talk. She noticed the food banquet and headed over to get some food before returning to her chosen spot for the night.

"Would you like something to drink, Hannah," Alonzo Solace said to his date as he spotted the bar, "I could use a little something."

"Oh, no thank you, but you go ahead. I want to talk to someone over there," Hannah gestured to the far corner of the room. Alonzo glanced over to where she was motioning and noticed a couple talking. He guessed that they worked with her and smiled as he left in search of the bar.

Devon was making her rounds throughout the room, she had decided to say hello to every person in the room. She periodically came back to her table to check on Uly and Yale. They were seemingly having a good time, and Uly had felt better when he saw other children wondering about. Of course, none of them came over to talk to him, but the knowledge that there were other kids there helped him feel better. These kids had not avoided him because he had the Syndrome; no, they knew how it worked and lived with siblings who had it. They avoid him because he was Devon Adair's son.

Julia poked at the food on her little plate and sipped her second glass of wine. She was lost in thought, which was why she jumped a little when she heard a male voice beside her.

"I'll have what she's having," Alonzo Solace gesturing to Julia with a smile, "I guess the food its that good, huh?"

Julia looked up and returned his smile, "Its okay, I'm just not that hungry," She looked him over and cocked an eyebrow.

"You'd think they could spring for the good stuff. Especially for Ms. Adair," he said with a waving motion in Devon's direction. He turned his head back to the woman he was talking to and noticed that she was looking him over, "My name is Alonzo Solace, what's yours?"

"My name is Dr. Julia Heller. I am one of the physicians on the Eden Project." she said evenly and could not shake the feeling that she had seen him before. She quickly dismissed the feeling as a probable patience who had come into the hospital for treatment of some kind. He was wearing a nice black tuxedo and it looked good on him.

"Really? Will you be on the Advance ship or the Colony ship?" Alonzo asked purely or reasons he wished to hide from her. He hoped that his interest in her did not show on his face. He remembered this woman from yesterdays collison.

"I will be accompaning Dr. Vasquez on the Advance ship," Julia stated matter-of-factly and gave him a curious look, wondering why he had asked.

"Well, Dr. Heller meet your pilot for the Advance ship," Alonzo broke into his trademark cocky tone and pulled a hand in towards himself.

A voice cut in, "Dr. Heller, please come over here, I would like you to met someone," it was Dr. Vasquez's familiar voice. Julia was glad to be interrupted and smiled to Alonzo as she left to see who Dr. Vasquez was referring to.

Morgan Martin gave his wife a turn as she mumered, "I love to go to these receptions. They treat you like royalty and its free."

Morgan gave his simple wife a look and noticed that Devon Adair was approaching them. "Hello, Ms. Adair very nice reception. I would like you to meet my wife, Bess Martin."

"Howdy, there Ms. Adair. May I say you look beautiful," Bess had a bright smile.

"Well, thank you Mrs. Martin," Devon said calmly.

"Please, its Bess," she corrected.

"Okay, Bess. Are you enjoying the evening?" Devon asked with a mechanical tone but the Martins' were unaware of it.

"Oh, yes very much, thank you," she said happily.

As Devon walked away from the happy couple she took a look around. She was very pleased with how the evening was going. Everyone was having a good time and the success of the reception was a good omen for the mission ahead.

-----The Night Before Launch--------

"I am going over to the Colony ship for one more check on the children. I'll be back in a couple of hours," Dr. Vasquez stated.

"Is that wise, sir, Devon has instructed us to board for departure," Julia's concern was evident her voice.

"I will be back well before departure, Dr. Heller," he stated as he started to turn.

Julia looked at the doctor. She had see this determination in his eyes countless times. Julia watched as he headed off to the airlock. Then returned to preparing her medical supplies in the storage cabinet.

Alonzo Solace was finishing the pre-flight check on the Advance ship when Commander Brodrick O'Neill leaned over and asked "How are things coming along, Ace?"

"The Advance ship checks out at 100 percent and the Colony ship is conducting their pre-flight check," Alonzo gave the Commander a smirk.

"Good, lets conduct a Station wide band check," O'Neill said with apprehension in his voice. He had a feeling that something was wrong. Things were going too well the last day and he suspected something was up. Years of experience had taught him to be wary of 'perfect' situations.

"Aye, sir," Alonzo wondered why he wanted to check the band waves of the local satellites but his job was not to wonder, it was to do as he was told.

Devon had finally gotten a chance away from the bridge of the ship to go tuck her son in for the night. His last night on the station. In the morning they were scheduled to get level six clearance and depart from the metal worlds forever. She walked casually to the quarters that she shared with her son and Yale. It was small but she did not mind it because they would soon be sleeping their twenty-two light year journey away to planet G889. Devon entered the room and watched her son talking about running on the planet. She smiled. Just then her son saw her and started questioning her about monsters on the planet as she entered the room.
