CHAPTER 2

~Hello, and on behalf of UEO, I welcome you to the _seaQuest_. Jeez,
that's dumb.~
Lucas Wolenczak stood in the docking bay, rocking back and forth on
his heels, waiting for the shuttle. After a few minutes of watching the
teen, Ben Krieg came up behind him and firmly put both hands on Lucas'
shoulders. "Cut it out," he said. "You're making me seasick." Lucas shrugged
out of Ben's grip. "What are you so nervous about anyway?" Ben asked.
Lucas shook his head. ~Like _you'd_ understand.~ "Why am _I_ meeting
them? Why not Bridger or Ford?"
Before Ben could answer, alarms went off and Lucas heard the
pnuematic _hiss_ of the shuttle docking. The bay door opened, and the
familiar recorded voice came over the loudspeakers, saying, "All visitors
please report to UEO customs with innauculation papers before proceeding.
All visitors please report to UEO customs with innauculation papers before
proceeding." And then they were standing there, in front of him, looking
around in awe.
~Calm down, people. It's just the docking bay.~ Lucas didn't
understand why the highlight of a lot of people's visits to the _seaQuest_
was the docking bay. Beside him, Ben cleared his throat to get the visitors'
attention. They all turned and looked at them. Lucas was about to say
"Hello, and on behalf of the UEO we welcome you to the _seaQuest_," but then
he saw _her_. The tall one, with the bright red hair. The boy with the
camera snapped a picture, bringing lucas back to reality. But he still
couldn't keep his eyes off _her_. "Um..." Lucas said. "Hi. I'm Lucas
Wolenczak, and this is Lt. Ben Krieg."
The adult that came with the small group stepped foreward to shake
Lucas' hand. "I'm Mr.... Katimski," he said. "Are you... a runner up from
one of... the other schools?" Lucas and Ben looked at each other.
Lucas smiled. "No," he said. "I'm the Chief Computer Analyst."
The short girl with the long blond hair and the bleached streak
giggled and said to the boy standing next to her -- who was wearing
eyeliner, Lucas noticed, "Told you!"
Katimski nodded, more in confusion than understanding. "Well," he
said.
Lucas shrugged. "Well... Um, do you want me to show you to your
quarter... or do you want the tour now?"
There was a lot of nervous murmuring and glances around that were so
much a part of teenage group decision-making. Finally, the gril with the red
hair spoke. "Um, whatever's easier for you." Lucas couldn't believe it.
_She_ talked to him.
"Well, I'll just give you the tour on the way to your quarters. Most
of the good stuff is that way anyway." It was a lie, but Lucas wanted to
spend some more time with _her_. It suddenly occured to him that he didn't
even know her name. "What's your name?" he found himself asking.
The red-head smiled shyly. "I'm Angela," she said. "And this is
Brian, Rickie, and Rayanne." The blond girl -- Rayanne -- grinned at the
photographer -- Brian.
"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked. Brian just snapped her picture.
