Spirulina??
By Simon Kattenhorn

Blue-green algae (aka cyanobacteria) was actually the earliest form of life on our planet. It appears fossilized in the rock record in the form of laminated limestones and stromatolites and dates back at least 3.2 billion years (examples discovered in South Africa and I think Australia). This form of life thus pre-dated the appearance of modern man on our planet by about three thousand, one hundred and ninety-eight million years (3.18 billion years). It pre-dated the earliest forms on animal life in the oceans by about 1.7 billion years, and it survived through a myriad of planetary catastrophes and extinction events that saw up to 90% of the species at any one time disappear from the planet for good. It's somewhat humbling to realize that this beautiful miracle of life, which most people wouldn't think twice about crushing under their feet as they walk over it, will most likely survive through any damage modern man will do to the planet. Such as occurred in the Earth 2 universe. Where mankind managed to destroy just about everything, blue-green algae survived, and the denizens of the Earth 2 stations found themselves having to frequently eat the stuff in the form of spirolina bars. Somewhat fitting, wouldn't you think? I'll chalk it up to yet another fascinating statement that this show managed to make.
